Today at school another news station showed up and I also had to do a radio interview from my Vice Principals office. That was funny. I got asked to be on the O'Reilley? Factor on Fox last night. Sorry, I am swamped with phone calls so I can't really update yet! Thanks for all the comments!!!!

Have you seen the O'Reilley Factor?

I really really hope you don't go on O'Reilley. If there ever was a show that will manipulate you into looking bad it is O'Reilley.

The conservatives won't be on you side you are using a word that many of them aren't even aware is anatomical word for a body part not some kind of slang. Top it off you are young. O'Reilley hates the youth of this country. He is definatly a man the believes anyone not old enough to run for president should shutup, unless it is to agree with him.

They're an accessory. The argument isn't about whether you're allowed to wear buttons, hair ribbons, t-shirts with cute slogans, tye-dyed sneakers, etc. but whether it was offensive enough to constitute a disruption. Buttons, like the other items listed, are simply current youth fashion.

Hey,

Heard about you through Metafilter and BoingBoing, also emailed the StarTribune in support of you guys. Keep up the fight, and don't forget that you have tons of supporters. There are colleges that would look upon what you are doing very favorably, so try not to worry about graduating high school (ie: Antioch College). Good luck!!!

Hi, I'm a member of the the VaginaPagina lj community http://www.livejournal.com/community/vaginapagina/ and someone posted a link to your story in the Star Tribune. What you are doing is fantastic and you have a lot of people who support you. I also have a "I <3 My Vagina" from my Uni's production the Vagina Monologues though it has never raised any contriversary.
Is there something that I can do to show my support? I have already written a letter to your principal.

All the best and keep up the good work!

The safe one, which I think is the only one that can be recommended, is to stay the hell away from O'Reilly.

The other: Study tapes of his show very carefully. Google 'O'Reilly falafel' and prepare a stock of witty but biting comebacks. Then go on his show and, when attacked, hit back below the belt and ridicule the bastard as a sleazy hypocrite. Calmly press your points while his face turns red; don't let him interrupt you or change the subject.

The second course may change your life, for the better or worse. Most likely O'Reilly will get you, being infinitely more experienced. But if you win, you're a star and a dragonslayer before even graduating from high school.

Good luck.

Oh man, this moron gets a gold star for entertainment value. Keep it up, you're dong the right thing. I guarantee you the administration of your school is totally fretting about all this - midnight meetings, burning e-mail threads, hours upon hours of phone calls.

Yes, I know your goal is NOT to upset the administration. They're doing it to themselves, you aren't causing any of their angst. Don't succumb to being angry at them, just let them know they're wrong and you're out to change their so-called "policy" because you feel they are wrong. Enough said.

? Respect Authority ? WTF? The parent poster will be sure to end up at a dead-end job, with a dead-end husband, never having accomplished anything in her life, mark my words. Hey, anonymous, start practicing this in the mirror: "Yes, Sir. I'll get right on that Sir. I'm sorry I spoke before I was spoken to Sir." And that's just to your husband. Hey, maybe you should start shopping for your very own burka now!

Keep it up Sarah! You definately, positively cannot make everyone happy. Do it for yourself, fight the GOOD fight and sleep well at night. You have TONS of support (obviously), use it to keep yourself going when morons like the parent anonymous pop out of the woodwork.

Oh, and for crying out loud, tell Bill O'Liely to get stuffed! That guy probably just wants to get you into his studio so he can attempt to seduce you. You'll have PLENTY of better offers than his show. Do some googling on him and you'll see how he operates. But if you do decide to go on his show, be sure to post when it airs because all of us here want to watch you take him down a rung!

Pffft, I had arguments all the time about the clothing I wore to
school and it wasn't to tick my teachers off. It was because most of
the time their criteria was based on their own arbitrary personal
beliefs, not backed by the school rules, and seriously inconvenienced
me by having to change my clothes etc. at least once a month *and* add
to a growing collection of clothing I'm not allowed to wear at school.

It certainly IS a matter of freedom of speech/expression when some
students are allowed to wear "abortion is murder" or their Christian
shirts, but other students can't wear pro-choice shirts, burqas, or
pagan jewelry. When my shorts are too short coming down to my knees
(because I had long, gangly arms, which they used as measurement), yet
cheerleaders are free to wear miniskirts every Friday. She shouldn't
have to get rid of a "vagina" pin (which is in support of the play
Vagina Monologues) when the word is in any biology textbook, and when
boys are allowed to wear "bikini patrol" and "Hooters" t-shirts.

That's like someone seeing a "Damn Yankees" t-shirt and getting
offended because they're from the North

Bwahahaha, you're just a silly little TWAT.

Way to build credibility from the start.

Its a crude pin, and your only doing it for attention because your an immature little brat who doesn't respect authority

It's only 'crude' if you have such a misogynistic point of view that the mere mention of a vagina frightens you.. and YES, a woman can be in that same situation. I have a great deal of respect for her and what she's doing. You say she should respect authority? Why? What did the "authority" figure do to DESERVE respect?

If the school doesn't want you to wear it, its for a good reason, don't twist the facts to suit yourself.

This is absolutely rediculous. It's for a good reason?! What reason? Don't assume that they have a good reason without knowing it.

If someone came into your house wearing something that offended you, you would tell them, the school is exercising their right to ask you to follow their rules on their property and NOTHING more.

If someone came into my house wearing something that offended me, I could ask them to remove it, as they are on my private property.

She was on public property. The principal doesn't own the school, he's an employee. The top administrator doesn't own the school, he or she is an employee of it. No person owns the school, it is public property. There is a COMPLETELY seperate set of rules that govern public property.

That was a really weak set of arguments. Come up with something better next time.

Actually, the school is a special type of public property that is allowed have their own set of rules, but that just means the fight turns into whether it was implied in the school rules, rather than an arbitrary decision (like you can make in your own house).
I have a friend who is going through this right now. Someone else handed him some very expensive manga right before class and when he walked in the teacher snatched it from him, read through it, and found a couple of the pictures had nudity. So now he faces ISS and the theft of the owner's manga, because a teacher took his personal property. (There are no school rules about carrying comic books, as long as you aren't reading them in class.)

I'm crazy about your icon, btw.

You mean about the comic books? Because I'm not the one with the vagina pin. ;)

Yeah, it's pretty ridiculous....they give high schoolers so much homework these days, that it takes until midnight to put a dent in it, go to bed exhausted, show up at school at 7 a.m. and start over. Weekends are spent on homework. Heaven forbid you're poor and need a job to support your family, because it's just not happening.

And then...and the icing on the cake...the only truly free time students have is in between their classes and during lunchbreaks (both of which are way too short), and teachers are there like hawks to make sure you're not trading comic books or cards or using "curse words". Sometimes I think teachers must be paid a commission per suicide or something.

I think older people forget that for high-schoolers, school is their life.

First off, I dig the Dib, too. :) In that icon's honor, I use my HNB. It's not Zim, but it is still JCV. I have used a fair number of three-letter acronyms and proper nouns in the first bit of this comment.

I know what you mean as far as schools being in a special status, but I was mainly speaking to the poster in regards to it's distinct difference from private property.

Oh yeah, completely. I was just narrowing it down before any argumentative people came in and tried to say the school can "do whatever it wants" since they're in between purely public and purely private. Plus, it's a place you're forced to go...my school had a dress code that said no clothes that had holes or were overly faded. That was 95% of my stuff, and any new clothes were presents people bought me at Hot Topic, like my "I hear voices" one deemed offensive by a Pentacostal teacher because it "made light of demonic possession, a very real threat." Whoa, tangent.

And I love Dib, and Nny, (and Zim and Gaz of course, too). I have a Johnny set of icons that I use on other sites, but I try to not mix too much or it gets confusing.

your supporters tout you as being brave and courageous. what is brave about preaching to the choir? i'm so sure the star tribune asked the "hard questions." you (and your sheep-ish flock) are the picture of cowerdice.
in my book, bravery is exemplified by standing up to your critics, not shrinking away from them in fear.

besides, who's to say o'reilly would have been unsupportive. he certainly is not what he has been made out to be in the above comments. he's a great advocate of youth, and has moderate views. but maybe moderation is something you tards just aren't ok. left or nothing? i suppose so.
