I just got home from wearing the shirts in front of the school. Everything went really well. I am dismissed from school for the day. Let's see what happens from here!

I'm glad to see some activist students standing up for their beliefs on our campuses across the nation.

I really would like to support you by buying one of the "I Support Your Vagina" t-shirts for boys.

Let me know how I can.

I've been following this with great interest and all I have to say, in reference to the

Star Tribune's story
(http://startribune.com/stories/1592/5382316.html), is that you are likely to have much, much more than a paltry fifteen minutes of fame. Keep it up--what a bright future you have!

Brava, Carrie! I cannot understand why a word naming a part of a woman's body is offensive, and your stand has brought to light violence against Women. Good luck in your studies!

You have been brave to go through this whole situation. Bravery and confidence will get you everywhere you want in this world. I look forward to hearing great things about you in the next few years. I remember being at a conference on bullying that all district employees where expected to be at prior to school starting this year and the speaker was talking about the way society chooses words. There are a million different words for vagina and penis, yet only one word for neck or elbow. We all start out in life with our parents automatically calling our reproductive organs different names- pee pee, coochie, etc, that there is already a stigma against our bodies. We SHOULD love our bodies and we should be taught that no part is better than others - the fact that vagina is a naughty word is incredibly absurd. Again its no wonder why every 3 minutes a woman in the united states is raped and places like the Women's Resource Center have to exist - we do not respect our bodies - vaginas are treated like naughty words - penises are given the identity of a thug and life continues on in a world of abuse, ignorance, rape and being sent home for a girl that knew her moral obligation to our community and was brave enough to make a stand.

Not all women who go to Winona Senior High have guns, but you can bet they all have vaginas. It's too bad this is an issue at all. The previous message is right! I am a staff member that was at that talk about bullying and Carrie making a stand should not even be an issue in our schools - she wouldn't be making a stand if vagina wasn't considered a "naughty" word. The district should remember why they brought in that speaker - and reward Carrie for creating a world that we ought to have.

Carrie, I applaud your courage and gonads. I had to take on the principal and board my senior year of high school relating to an issue of free speech. I graduated top of my class and wanted to give my speech on what I wanted to talk about. I was 'censored' by the school. I gave it on individuality and the importance of staying true to yourself. Wish someone had taped it because I no longer remember it all, but I do want to say that please stay true to yourself. America is in the toilet because so many young people that were right about their views of the world and courageous enough to stand by truth, later as they got older started to compromise and sell themselves...and everyone else short. We live in world with epidemic violence against females and it is getting worse, not better. Remember this day, Carrie, and always believe in yourself and the courage within you no matter how many obstacles you will face in your future. This world is what we make it, and you younger generations can change the course of history if stand tall and gather in large numbers. It all starts with one voice. Thank you Carrie, for standing tall.

There have been several discussions on blogs all over cyberspace regarding your efforts. Today I saw several comments here:

I have to tell you how proud I am of you! I am proud you are standing up for your rights, I am proud for you standing up for what you believe to be a just cause. There are so many people Carrie that are followers ---- it is people like YOU that turn out to be our leaders.

Don't give up! You are picking your battles wisely. Good luck and I will be reading about you I know. Take care, stay safe, God speed.

what is it you [heart] about your vagina? what would if you had seen a young man wear a "i [heart] my penis" shirt before you had ever even conceived of your shirt or seen the vagina monologues? i bet you wouldn't be in support of his free speech. you wouldn't support his gender equality. you would be deeply offended and accuse him of sexism or schovanism or some other equally hateful crime. you're not asking for equality. you're asking for superiority. wake up to your hypocrisy.
as women, we have made great strides over the last half a century, and i pray you don't muck it all up with jr high idiocy.

I think if she (or anyone) saw such a shirt on a boy, they would ask why they were wearing it. Then going on the reason and validity of his action, she would then make a decision as to what she thought about it. That's what smart people do. They also don't make blanket assumptions or accusations.
I can't think of a single time where Carrie's position has been one of superiority. As I saw it, it was about raising awareness of women's issues, and expressing her right to make a political statement. That doesn't sound like idiocy.
The great strides, that women have accomplished, were made by those who were willing to challenge existing rules and mindsets. In a time where the women's movement is seeking to remain relevant to the younger generation, it is a very good thing to see how one of the younger generation is taking their own initiative. Your worries about her mucking it up are unfounded.

Actually, I see it as a desperate ploy for attention, as is evident by the fact that she never really got around to actually discussing any "women's issues" (which is a myth, seeing as there are no gender-specific issues), and even on her "information fliers" they handed out, by far most of the page was simple, declarative sentences about Carrie, not the issue. A whole lot of 'I's, and 'Me's. Frankly, there are few moments when I am more proud to have a penis.

Highly unlikely. Apparently after turning down all the administration's offers to set up an information booth IN SCHOOL addressing the "issues" she backed, she merely wore the shirt for one day, got suspended, and has backed down from all she has done to get her 15 minutes of fame. If I am wrong, then somebody please let me know Carrie's recent edneavors into creating a gender equal society and the education of America's youth.

I'm curious, why does someone standing up for something bother you so much that you have to assign motives to that person and insult them? I do not mean to be inflammatory, I am sincerely asking. I would like to know the other side of this issue, as to me it seems so unimpeachable.

Because I know her. Since I live in her town, I know both sides of the issue. School administration has made several attempts to let carrie set up a booth at school enlightening people about women's issues. I've even heard that there have been proposals of after-school groups. All of these proposals she has turned down by carrie. To me this brings to the table the fact that perhaps her initial motives weren't to enlighten, but to gain attention.

Was it a totally unconditional offer, or was it something like: "Carrie, if you back down, we will let you set up a booth/after school program..." etc.

It was more like a "Carrie, we understand what you are standing up for but think you are going about it in the wrong way. The shirts are inappropriate for school, you know that. There is a time and a place for everything. Even though we are lacking funds, let us set up a booth for you at school if you care to address your issue."

Keep in mind that I am good friends with the other girl (Emily) who started this venture with Carrie. She was extremely hurt when Carrie shut out this offer.

So basically, they are still asking her to agree that the shirts are "inappropriate" for school. I guess that's where I, and assumedly Carrie, disagree with the school and that's why she didn't take them up on the offer.

To me there is nothing on that shirt that is inappropriate for a school.

Regarding your kind of defense against any ad hominem attack that may arise on you from me: I don't want to make it out like I'm attacking you. I just disagree with you.

...she just wants attention. She thinks it is fashionable to wear a shirt that says "I love my pussy" because she saw it on MTV or Entertainment Tonight (quality TV...which is an oxymoron to begin with). This girl couldn't hold a debate regarding any real issues if her life depended on it.

As soon as you open your mind, question all the propaganda that has been fed to you (that you swallow so willfully), and start to think for yourself...you may realize what a total wacko you stopped yourself from becoming...that is, if you stop the nonsense. My guess is that you won't look back on your wasted youth until you are in your late thirties...and, by then, you will have wasted more than your youth believing such hate-filled drivel that racist and sexist bigots like Eve Ensler, Gloria Steinem, Gloria Allred and the like brainwash you with on a daily basis.

And, yes, I am posting anonymously...I don't have the time to get a username and password. I am not a privileged, liberal kid who lives life off of other people's money. I need to earn a living. I respect the dollar and those who work hard to earn a buck, before giving $$ away through taxes to countless, worthless programs that are not measured for effectiveness and only put into place by politicians more concerned about re-election than their real, law abiding constituents.

Just a question. Do you live in Winona? Ever wonder why Carrie never posts on her beloved livejournal if she's so dedicated to her cause? She started this so we would do exactly what we are doing: arguing about her. Giving her attention. Hm...let's see. It's been how long since you've heard even a whisper of her in the news? Or her "debates"? About what?

I live in Winona. I know and am very good friends with Emily Nixon. I know BOTH sides of the issue. Emily disbanded from Carrie after the numerous attempts were made to give her the time to educate others about her issue were turned down.

But if her cause is genuine then we should all respect her decision, and her bravery in doing so. I don't live in her town and I can't tell you why she was motivated to do this cause, but maybe just maybe it is genuine... and this girl is standing up for what she believes in, in her own way.
